Naked News Became a hot issue in Korea

Naked News is a real television newscast featuring naked newscasters. Naked News started in June 2000 in Canada as a web-based news service featuring an all-female cast. The concept was shocking enough to catch audiences’ attention. The audiences, mostly males, liked it because they could enjoy looking at naked females while they were watching news. Thus, it became popular.

Recently, Naked News became a hot issue in Korea because Naked News started its service on June 23th as Naked News Korea. Naked News Korea divided its service into two versions, an adult version and an adolescence version. The adult version targets audiences whose ages are over 19 years old and features topless female casters. The adolescence version targets audiences whose ages are between 15 and 19 years old. It does not violate the Korean law to broadcast on web. However, I think that this is a great example of objectifying females.

I may say as a man that this type of news is welcomed, but if I look closely into this, this is merely selling sexual content to make money. For example, the nudity of attractive female caters will attract audiences, mostly males. Many audiences mean many advertisements to advertise. Eventually, it will result a lot of money to earn.

Moreover, it is consistent with John’s study on two major magazines that are showing an illustration of objectifying females on their cover and cover lines. It is also consistent with the content of the video, “Killing us softly” that demonstrates that mass media keeps portray females as sex objects and sells the concept of sex. Objectifying dehumanizes females and leads to violence on females eventually.

Overall, I think that this type of a problem cannot be solved just by setting naked males on their show. I think that Naked News should be properly monitored by censorship even if it does not violate the law. It should be distinguished with porn not to give any wrong idea to adolescence for their proper education. I hope that Naked News find a way to combine news and entertainment to create a new genre that can be loved by all audiences without objectifying females and males.

  1. Wow, I have never heard of this Naked News before but as I was reading your post alound my roomate knew exactely what it was. First of all I think it is absurb and do not understand the point of it. Why can't people just watch the regular news? Is this just a ploy to get more viewers to watch that particular network station? To me that would be the only valid reason. What's wrong with watching the regular news is what I wanna know. I agree with you completely it is totally objectifying women and honeslty adding men to the program, in my opinion, would make it worse, it would just go to say that its all better now because both sexes are being presented in the same way, yes that woould be true but their both being objectified in the same way. I think this Naked News should just be taken off the air in all countries.

  2. Naked News sounds interesting to say the least. I cant think of anything more objectfying than having a topless woman read the news, but i think having a man to even it out would make it worse. I think the real issue with this is the way nudity and sex is viewed with disgust when in the media. If the content of the news was anything similar to what normal news shows we have here, then the content would be far worse in nature than seeing a nude woman. Kwon let me know if im wrong, but its seems like america is the only country that puts such a high level taboo on nudity. When i think about the children, id rather have them get their news from a topless female than glenn beck, or wolf blitzer

  3. I've never watched naked news so its hard for me to comment decisively on whether it objectifies women. However, I love the concept and believe it could open a needed dialog.

Community festival in Columbus has become somewhat famous for providing a venue for women to walk around topless in accordance with a recent legal move to remove the exposing of breasts from indecent exposure lists. I love this social rebellion! Not because I want to see breasts, but because I believe by making breasts obscene, women are further repressed in a society where man controls the nature of sexuality.

Having women give the news without a top, or some other non sexual daily action topless could help desensitize viewers to seeing something so natural as "adult" or wrong.

  4. I have heard of naked news but I guess I enjoy watching traditional media. More importantly, if you are a man and only get motivated to know what is going on in the world due to naked girls, you may be an ignorant bafoon. If naked news was broadcasted in this country, all of the somber news about war, killings, public shootings and unemployment, this shit does not belong in the same broadcast. We are now stepping into a world that combines the objectification of women with what is going on in the world. This sort of perverted shit can lead to a slippery slope of mistreating women. More importantly what naked news reminds me of is all the moronic characters in the movie Idiocracy. We are reverting back to our primal, hedonistic ways of sex and pleasure.

  5. Good points, Rob! In reading this initially I didn't even consider desensitization as a positive effect of this newscast.

    Kwon,
Interesting topic! I think it'd be interesting to view at least once. I wonder, are the females used in the broadcast "real" women or they the typical idea of a centerfold that we've discussed in class thus far? Also, what are the difference between the age-specific broadcasts that are offered? There aren't 15 to 19 y.o. that are naked are there? That I would find inappropriate in any context.
On an additional note, I like how you incorporated some of the rhetorical terms (even if not directly stated) from Harris. It's great to see the practical application of how we're learning to write.
Look forward to hearing more from you!
